HIMSS Oregon Nursing Informatics Panel: Improving Nursing Efficiency 2016

We are proud to announce that the Portland Community of Nursing Informaticians and HIMSS Oregon will jointly host an event to discuss current challenges and projects related to nursing efficiency and to gather feedback and ideas that could lead to significant improvements in how EHR’s support care delivery.

The discipline of Nursing Informatics is a growing, important sector in healthcare IT. As the largest group of users of electronic health records, nurses are seeking a greater influence on optimization and development efforts so that the tool is less of a burden on clinicians and more of a ‘vital key’ to the delivery of high quality care.

Healthcare organizations and vendors now realize the importance of refining the design of electronic health records so they better facilitate efficiency and accuracy of documentation, and streamline clinical workflows. Opportunities to discuss ideas, brainstorm and collect the input of nurses are critical to furthering the goals of all stakeholders.

Jessica Alexander, RN, MSN

Director, Clinical Informatics
Kaiser Permanente

Jessica M. Alexander MSN, RN, RN-BC, is the Director of Clinical Informatics for Kaiser Permanente NW Hospitals. She has been a nurse for 16 years and with Kaiser (this time around) since 2012. Her clinical nursing background is in acute care medical surgical nursing with an emphasis on patients with Diabetes and renal failure. Jessica has been working in informatics for 12 years, and has touched all along the spectrum from system design, implementation, and support through ongoing maintenance. Much of Jessica’s current work is focused on developing a strong team of informaticists to cover all the caregivers in the hospital setting and beyond. Her team recently grew in scope to include perioperative services in the hospital and ambulatory settings. Together the team maintains the critical relationships with users to provide forums for them to be engaged and involved in continuing to improve the tools and technology they use every day. Team highlights from the past year include implementing Epic's Obstetrics module, Stork, Barcoded Blood Administration, and implementing mechanisms to support the organization's initiatives around situational awareness which flows into their daily highly reliable organizational structure. They are currently working to overhaul and improve the last handover the patient and hospital experience, discharge, and developing interdisciplinary tools to track discharge preparedness and related patient flow metrics.

Valerie Fong

Providence Health & Services

Valerie Fong MSN, RN has clinical experience from both ambulatory and inpatient settings in Adult Medicine, Urgent Care, Pediatric Med-Surgery & Oncology, and Adult Med-Surg. She currently serves as the Regional CNIO for Providence Health & Services in Oregon. As a leader for clinical systems vision, strategy, development and implementation of clinical information systems, her work supports clinical practice and improved clinical & administrative decision-making to ensure patient safety, clinical quality, and other efficiency outcomes. She engages clinical operations in close partnership and collaboration to align practice workflows with health information technologies across the continuum of care.

Meagan Mangus, RN, BSN, LNC, CPHQ

Manager, Ambulatory Nursing Informatics
Kaiser Permanente

Meagan has been a nurse for 18 years and with Kaiser since 2006. Her clinical nursing background is in pediatric nursing and she believes that her career path from hospital nursing to ambulatory nursing to operations and project management has given her an advantage and insight into the needs of the clinical care teams. Much of Meagan’s current work is focused on clinical technology solutions for Nursing Care Management. She has recently focused on developing the patient-centered, longitudinal plan of care, and innovation that addresses the impact of technology on nursing documentation, transitions of care across the continuum, patient engagement, health literacy, system design and nursing analytics. Meagan is new in her informatics career, but is quickly learning and working to establish her place amongst the industry leaders. She is working towards her Masters in Nursing Innovation & Intra/Entrepreneurship from Drexel University and recently co-authored a publication with Epic on Ambulatory Nursing Care Management in Healthy Planet.

Cheri Warren, RN, BSN, RN-BC

Manager, Nursing Informatics
Oregon Health & Science University

Cheri Warren, RN, BSN, RN-BC, is the Manager for Nursing Informatics at Oregon Health & Science University. Cheri’s clinical background includes Family Practice and Women’s Health in ambulatory settings, and Cardiac Cath Lab and Adult Critical Care in the hospital. In her current role, she provides clinical leadership within the Department of Clinical Informatics, and formulates clinical information system vision and strategy for nursing across OHSU’s Healthcare Mission. Her experience in application management, IT best practice, process improvement, and project management informs the informatics perspective that she lends to nursing operations and to project sponsorship. Cheri’s team of nurse informaticists partners with pharmacy informatics and EHR analyst teams, to provide support and solutions for clinical disciplines across the enterprise. Recent initiatives include optimization of the inpatient nurse’s EHR workspace, standardization of medication supply, dispensing, and administration documentation within ambulatory encounters, and optimization of Ambulatory Care Management tools to support OHSU’s membership in the Propel Health collaborative.

Karen Waske, MN, RN

CNIO and Director, Inpatient Clinical Systems & Informatics
Legacy

Karen has been a nurse leader at Legacy Health since 1991. Her clinical background includes direct care nursing roles in neonatal intensive care, pediatric and bone marrow transplant units. Prior to her current role, she served Legacy as the NICU manager at Emanuel Medical Center, and as the system’s Director of Clinical Practice Support. Karen began her formal informatics journey when she was named the Project Director for Legacy’s Epic EHR implementation in 2010. In her current role Karen leads Legacy Health in the strategy, development and implementation of information and clinical technology to support nursing, nursing practice, clinical applications and clinical/administrative decision-making. In partnership with Legacy’s CMIO, she develops clinical information systems strategy, and oversees optimization of existing systems for nurses, physicians, and other clinical care providers.

Ivy Holt, RN, MS

Sr. Clinical Informatist
Providence Health & System

Ivy spent 20 years advocating for the design and development of electronic tools supporting the work of the bedside nurse. The voice of the bedside nurse was always at the forefront of Ivy’s work as she spent 24 years as a Critical Care nurse, followed by 20 years as a Nursing Informatics leader working with groups of bedside nurses. Ivy retired Spring 2015 and returned to Providence to assist with projects on an as needed basis.

Continuing Education Hours

This event has been approved for up to 1.5 hours in continuing education (CE) hours for use in fulfilling the continuing education requirements of the Certified Professional in Healthcare Information Management Systems (CPHIMS) and Certified Associate in Healthcare Information and Management Systems (CAHIMS).
