Shared Decision Making: Using Technology to Guide Informed Decision Making at the Point of Care

Clinical Expertise and Patient Expertise = Shared Decision Making. (SDM) is a key component of Population Health Management. Attendees will gain a better understanding of how SDM is being used in the clinical/patient encounter in Oregon and IT’s integral role in its successful implementation and utilization.

Presenters will address the following areas:

• Explain what clinicians want when asking for Shared Decision Making tools
• Share experiential/usage information for how the tools were adopted
• Discuss Information Technology’s integral role in SDM’s successful implementation and utilization

Actual use cases will be presented where SDM was utilized. This is an interactive event; please bring your questions.

Rozie Lindsay

Rozie Lindsay is a Senior IT Project Manager at Kaiser Permanente, specializing in Care Delivery Portfolio projects, and is an MBA student through the joint OHSU + Portland State Healthcare MBA program. Rozie got her start in informatics as a medical scribe, which sparked her passion for provider workflow efficiency, simplifying processes and technology wherever possible, and implementing durable systems and products with high end-user and business utility. Career highlights include starting her own scribe consulting company, co-founding the OHSU Scribe Program, and working for Epic, Enli (formerly Kryptiq) and OHSU in informatics project management positions.

Andrew Felcher, MD, FACP

Hospitalist Physician, Director of Guidelines, Evidence-Based Medicine, and Shared Decision Making

Andrew Felcher, MD, FACP is a practicing physician and director of evidence-based medicine, guidelines and shared decision making at Northwest Permanente. He has a strong interest in clinical informatics and shared decision making. His focus is on tools that are embedded in the electronic medical record designed to be used at the point of care. These tools help patients and clinicians make informed clinical decisions together in real time. He has experience with both building evidence-based shared decision making tools and implementing a variety of tools in a large health care system. He is also the physician director of the Kaiser Permanente Northwest Anticoagulation Clinic. He is on the faculty of the Department of Medical Informatics and teaches medical informatics courses for his medical group.

Karen Eden, Ph.D.

Karen B. Eden, PhD, is a professor in the Department of Medical Informatics and Clinical Epidemiology. She has a diverse research background that includes evidence-based medicine, decision modeling and informed patient decision making. She has extensive experience in translating medical evidence into patient-friendly interactive decision aids that inform the patients, help them set priorities for the decision, and prepare them for a discussion with a provider. These decision aids span a broad range of clinical topics including childbirth decision making after cesarean, domestic violence safety planning, opioid use, and breast cancer screening. The development process includes working with stakeholders (providers, patients, policy makers) to create a product that is evidence-based and will support a shared decision making process. She also serves on the International Patient Decision Aids Standards Collaboration (IPDAS) that is establishing internationally approved standards for patient decision aids.

James Case, MBI

James Case, MBI, is a senior software engineer with the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health and School of Nursing. He works with a variety of researchers in designing, implementing, and evaluating evidence-based interventions, particularly in mHealth. Many of these interventions are consumer health decision aids that assist in promoting the shared decision making model. He also assists research teams in identifying study data and workflow requirements which are then translated into a customized Clinical Trial Management System (CTMS) that he developed at Johns Hopkins. James also operates a consulting and development firm specializing in mHealth and app development.

Mark Remiker, MA, CCRP

Research Associate for the Oregon Rural Practice-based Research Network (ORPRN)

Mark Remiker, MA, is a research associate for the Oregon Rural Practice-based Research Network (ORPRN). Through practice facilitation, Mr. Remiker works directly with primary care practices to help them implement research protocols and build their quality improvement capacity. In his 4 years at ORPRN, Mr. Remiker has gained expertise in building patient registries, empaneling patients, and administering and interpreting results from patient experience of care surveys. Prior to his work with ORPRN, he held a position as a research coordinator for the Wisconsin Research and Education Network – a Practice-based Research Network based out of the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Continuing Education Hours

This event has been approved for up to 1 hours in continuing education (CE) hours for use in fulfilling the continuing education requirements of the Certified Professional in Healthcare Information Management Systems (CPHIMS) and Certified Associate in Healthcare Information and Management Systems (CAHIMS).
