Maximizing System Data to Identify Children with Complexity

Join a panel discussion by leaders and stakeholders of the Oregon Pediatric Improvement Partnership (OPIP) for an overview of novel methodology to identify children with health complexity to guide and inform state, system and practice-level efforts and improvement.

The forum is open to HIMSS members, guests, and all those interested in learning about the changing role of informatics and health IT professionals.

Presentation Topics

• Overview of the partnership between the Oregon Pediatric Improvement Partnership (OPIP) and the Oregon Health Authority to develop a standardized way, using system-level data, to identify publicly insured children in Oregon with medical and social health complexity.
• How the data has been shared with CCOs.
• Overview of the population-level health complexity findings statewide and variations observed by CCO, county, age and race/ethnicity.
• How data can be used to guide and inform investment and improvements in care to meet the needs of children with health complexity.

Speakers

Colleen Reuland

Director
Oregon Pediatric Improvement Partnership

Ms. Reuland is the Director of the Oregon Pediatric Improvement Partnership (OPIP), and an Instructor in the Pediatrics Department at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU). OPIP is statewide organization meant to create a meaningful, long term collaboration of stakeholders invested in child health care quality, with the common purpose of improving the health of the children and youth of Oregon. OPIP is dedicated to building health and improving outcomes for children and youth by: (1) Collaborating in quality measurement and improvement activities across the state, (2) Supporting evidence-guided quality activities, (3) Incorporating the patient and family voice into quality efforts, and (4) Informing policies that support optimal health and development for all children and youth. Previous to her position at OPIP, Ms. Reuland was a Senior Research Associate with the Child and Adolescent Health Measurement Initiative (CAHMI) for fourteen years. She is married and the proud mother of three children.

Jon C. Collins, PhD

Director
Office of Health Analytics, Oregon Health Authority

Dr. Collins is currently the Director of the Office of Health Analytics at the Oregon Health Authority and an adjunct assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry at OHSU. He received his Ph.D. in 1997 in Social Psychology from the University of Georgia. He began working in the healthcare research field shortly after leaving UGA and has spent the majority of his 20-year career with the State of Oregon. While occasionally publishing and presenting at national conferences, the bulk of his work is on the practical use of data within state government.

Richard Gibson, MD, PhD

President
Health Record Banking Alliance

Richard Gibson is the President of the Health Record Banking Alliance, a non-profit organization founded in 2006 to promote consumer-centered, consumer-controlled, comprehensive, lifetime health records. Dr. Gibson comes to HRBA from Gartner, Inc., where he was a Research Director. Previously he held roles as Chief of Healthcare Intelligence at Providence Health & Services, Chief Information Officer at Legacy Health in Portland, and Chief Medical Information Officer at Providence Health System, Oregon Region. He is an Affiliate Assistant Professor in the Department of Medical Informatics and Clinical Epidemiology at Oregon Health and Science University. Dr. Gibson’s educational background includes a BS from Stanford University, an MD from Case Western Reserve University, a PhD in Medical Informatics from the University of Utah with a fellowship at Intermountain Health Care in Salt Lake City, and an MBA from the Wharton School. Dr. Gibson is a retired family physician and emergency physician.

Continuing Education Hours

This event has been approved for up to 1.5 hours in continuing education (CE) hours for use in fulfilling the continuing education requirements of the Certified Professional in Healthcare Information Management Systems (CPHIMS) and Certified Associate in Healthcare Information and Management Systems (CAHIMS).
